Meet Trunk Collective
Today's guest post is from Karina, owner of the brand new shop Trunk Collective!
Having had a very successful 10 year stint in media sales, I have been fortunate enough to travel to some incredibly amazing places. Some of which literally took my breath away, while others left me with an overwhelming sense of hopelessness.
They say traveling is the window into one’s soul, a way for us to connect with something greater than ourselves, to understand cultures far removed from our own perceptions and understanding. This completely rang true for me. The more I saw, the more I began to question my own moral standings, and how I lived my life.
I was always a lover of nature and an avid conservationist, but seeing first hand the effects our over consumption has on other countries was a huge eye opener for me. I was suddenly and very intrinsically connecting the dots of my purchasing decisions. I became keenly aware of the impact my lifestyle had on the people making the products, clothes and materials I used every day.
It is not always easy making the transition going from being an innocent, albeit denying consumer, to becoming an ethical, conscious consumer. It can be so enticing to put on the magical goggles that only let’s you see what’s in front of you, that gorgeous shiny object that is very well priced at your nearest department store. Why not, right? It’s just one small piece of jewelry; you’ll wear it only a few times and be done with it.
The problem is, that little piece of jewelry cost a lot more than what its cost you. Someone is working very hard to make it, and getting paid very little to do it. It may even be a child. And let’s not even discuss the environmental impact of sourcing the materials in a way that allows for such quantities to be made at such volumes. It becomes a never ending rabbit whole, once you begin to delve into the manufacturing process of our fast fashion obsessed society.
Don’t get me wrong. I like pretty things too. But I’ve learned to appreciate and value beautiful pieces that also tell a beautiful story. I do not want anyone to have suffered at the hands of my buying something; whether that be an animal or a human being. I do not think anything bought for fashion, beauty or home should be at the price of modern day slavery, or disruptive to our natural ecosystem.
Instead, let’s crate positive social impact by choosing to buy things that have a clean, beautiful and transparent story, from beginning to end; from how it was sourced, to how it was made, and even how it was shipped. Because that is the best way we can truly turn the tides and begin to live in a world that values process over mass production.
My journey into becoming a more conscious consumer was definitely not an easy one. I had a very hard time finding conscious fashion brands that were not insanely expensive. It seemed the ethical fashion world was for those with deep pockets, making it very inaccessible to the majority. I had a very hard time with this, as I felt the majority of consumers wanted to do better, but perhaps couldn’t afford it.
I wanted to create a space for women who wanted to shop more consciously but didn’t necessarily have the large budget that's often associated with conscious consumerism. I wanted to create an online market place where you could FEEL good about the products you were buying and the price you were paying for it!
And thus, Trunk Collective was born. Out of a strong desire to DO BETTER. To create social impact by how and where we spend our money, and to show that we don’t have to pay a premium for products that are made well by hand, with the environment and people in mind.
Trunk Collective follows a strict ethos model, and we carefully select brands that fall into one or more of our categories. We stand for Women Empowerment, Cruelty Free, Sustainable, Fair Trade, Artisan Made, Cause Driven, Recycled/Upcycled and locally made.
We want you to FEEL GOOD about buying at Trunk Collective. We truly have the power to make an impact, whether it’s negative or positive is up to you.
With the choices you make in your every day life, you are casting a vote on the kind of world you want to create and live in for the future.
Let’s think differently and buy things that matter and that are done at the highest quality possible. And yes, let’s even buy less. Because if traveling has taught me anything, it is that what you fill your home with doesn’t matter half as much as who you share your heart with.
Let’s cultivate an understanding for the world that helps us realize we are all deeply connected. What happens to you in your bubble affects someone half way across the world from you; whether you want to acknowledge it of not. It is truth.
So let’s be game changers. Let’s be brave. Let’s go against the grain and really THINK about what we buy. How it was made and the story it tells. Become an agent of change through your wardrobe, your actions and your voice.
Trunk Collective donates 7% of EVERY SALE to their current charity partner, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which rescues orphaned elephants and integrates them back into the wild.
