Behind The Brand - Hand in Hand
Hand in Hand started when married couple Bill Glaab and Courtney Apple stumbled upon an article stating that over 5 million children die each year from water related illness and that those deaths could be prevented with hand washing and clean water. Wanting to create a common household product that could also save lives, in 2011, Bill and Courtney started with just one bar of soap and a simple business model: Buy a bar, Give a bar. Partnering with world-wide child advocacy group, My Neighbor’s Children, Hand in Hand chose to donate to orphanages in the developing country of Haiti and still do so today. For Bill and Courtney, it wasn’t only important to create a business that gave back, but also one that was environmentally and ethically responsible with products made from sustainable resources.
All Hand in Hand soaps are 100% vegetable based, vegan, made with organic ingredients, gluten-free, biodegradable, palm-free, cruelty-free, paraben-free and petrochemical-free. Starting with just one scent of soap, Orange Blossom, the company quickly expanded to include a range of scents. Today, Hand in Hand offers six one-of-a-kind fragrances: Lavender, Orange Blossom, Rose Water, Sea Salt, White Tea and Wildflower & Fern. They have also expanded their products, now making hand-poured soy candles, bath salts, liquid soap, lotion, sugar scrub, and lip balm. All products are hand crafted in small batches in the USA.
Along with expanding the line, Hand in Hand also wanted to expand the giving back element to the business. In 2013, Bill and Courtney went to Haiti to celebrate the opening of their first well. This well serves over 1,200 people each and every day for a decade, providing clean, fresh water not far from their homes. Today, for each Hand in Hand product purchased, a bar of soap and one month of clean water is donated. To date, over 150,000 bars of soap have been donated and 4 wells have been built or repaired since 2013, providing thousands of people with access to clean water.
