Heart of Haiti

Heart of Haiti is a project in collaboration with Macy's...yeah, that Macy's, that provides a massive outlet to artisans in Haiti who have created incredible works of art but do not have a market to sell their goods or the resources to sustain their business. Through the sale of these works of art, local Haitian artisans are given 50% of the wholesale price of the product, allowing them to grow their business, support their family and continue to rebuild. We forget here that although the Earthquake was years ago, the country is still rebuilding and needs support from their neighbors to make this happen. For this Valentines Day Heart of Haiti asked me to share a bit about what Haiti means to me.

Where do I begin.

I have had the great honor of traveling to Haiti on three different occassions to work with an NGO in the country. Over the years of traveling there I've developed friendships with some remarkable people. One person that stands out is a girl I met when I was in my early 20's. She was a teenager and at the time she was doing odd jobs with the NGO I was working with to support her family and earn extra money. This young lady and I became friends. I have watched from afar (and through facebook) as she worked, became the first person in her family to graduate high school and recently became a mother to the sweetest little girl I've ever seen. These might seem like small accomplishments to those of us living in the US but in Haiti, a country that has been rocked by natural disaster, violence and disease for decades, these accomplishments carry extraordinary meaning. Today I celebrate my sweet friend and her many accomplishments and am reminded that as her friend I need to continue to be mindful about what is happening in her country. Not because I pity her, not because I need to do my "good deed" but because she is my friend.

Today I invite you to extend a hand of friendship to an artisan in this beautiful country and check out some of the great work they are producing. It might be the perfect Valentines gift for someone you love or an addition to your home. To learn more about the work Heart of Haiti is doing check out some of their videos.
